Penn State Youth Journalism Award Update

Got word today about the Penn State Youth Sports Journalism Award contest.

Unfortunately, I didn't win. But, I have to put a positive spin on it. I was one of three national finalists. The winner was Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, who did a series about concussions. I went toe-to-toe with some of the top journalists at the top newspapers in the country. So that was a thrill in itself. Still wish I would've won, though.

The awards chair said the judges were impressed with my work and strongly encouraged me to submit materials for next year's contest.

Getting closer

National award finalist

Cool news!! I received a letter today (Monday, Feb. 6) from Penn State University's John Curley Center for Sports Journalism notifying me I have been selected as one of three finalists for the Award for Excellence in the Coverage of Youth Sports.

I will be notified in mid- to late-February if I've won or not.

If I win, I will go to Penn State in April to give a presentation on the story, receive the award and be presented $1,000.

The story I submitted was an enterprise piece about the safety and rule changes with youth and high school baseball bats and the economic impact it has on parents and baseball programs at all levels.
